MP3 and audio

There's more to desktop music than iTunes (although we've got that at Download.com, too). When it comes to music, any of these apps will be worth your while.

  • Spotify

    Spotify

As Donald Bell put it in his review of Spotify: "It's the best free music option since stealing." We could not agree more.

Simply go to Spotify.com and enter your e-mail address to get an invite from Spotify. Then, just download the free version, enter your favorite songs in the search box, and start listening right away. You get unlimited streams for six months (with some ads peppered in), then there are a few limitations, but paying just $5/month removes all the ads and gives you unlimited streaming from any desktop computer. For $10/month you can stream any song to your mobile devices. We highly recommend this app to any music lover. (There are several music services to choose from, however. Check out our post on the different music services.)

  • VLC Media Player

    VLC Media Player

VLC Media Player is a longtime open-source favorite, and the latest version is also the first to be out of beta development. It's not the only option for free video playback, but it's one of the best, and the feature updates in version 1 make it well worth the upgrade.

Users can now get frame-by-frame advancement, granular speed controls allowing for on-the-fly slower or faster playback, and live recording of streaming video. The toolbars are fully customizable, so you can have only the buttons you need in the interface, there's AirTunes streaming, and there's better integration in Gtk environments. Along with the improvements, VLC continues to offer robust support for a wide range of video and audio formats, including OGG, MP2, MP3, MP4, DivX, HD codecs like AES3, Raw Dirac, and even support for playing back zipped files.
