Publisher's description
From Hussar Games :1848 is a turn based computer strategy game, set during the violent era of the Hungarian Independence War of 1848-49. 1848 was a year of revolutions. Most of the uprisings were crushed quickly, but Hungary was an exception. While Austria was occupied in dealing with the independence movements in Italy, Hungary used the time to train and deploy a competent army.. The newly created Honved Army suffered some set-backs in 1848, but in the 1849 spring counter-attack, the whole country was liberated. Victory was sweet but short for Hungary--in the summer of 1849 the Tsar of Russia intervened with 200,000 troops. In history, this force could not be stopped. Can you change history?
1848 is a turn based operational strategy game for the PC. The game plays out on a large hexagonal map. You are responsible for all your forces and must decide what do with each of them. Attack, retreat, recon, defend, fortify, siege an enemy fort or build a new army the choice is up to you.
1848 has a simple, intuitive interface. There are no counters in the game, only large animated figures. More than a dozen unit types are included, organized into batteries and regiments. The tutorial campaign will teach you all the things you need to be successful in the game. When you feel ready, you can fight against Austria for Hungary's independence or crush the Hungarian rebellion with the Habsburg army in 6 campaigns. All campaigns start with a well-researched setup, giving you an authentic historical starting point. When you have mastered the AI, play against a human opponent via E-mail, Hotseat play or across a TCP/IP Network (LAN and Internet).
This download gives you access to the full version of the Hungarian Independence War simulator 1848.

"A little raw and a lot Hungarian, but interesting."
Pros: Solid, no bugs that I found, which is both pleasant and surprising in a small company's first game.
The situation of Hungary as depicted is interesting, and the game includes sufficient detail to engage the mind.
A couple of other saving graces: 1) The game allows you to turn off the music.
2) The game is playable at high resolutions (1280x1024), unusual in a wargame.
3) How often do you get to play as the Hungarians?
Cons: NO FACILITY TO FIND THOSE @$(*#@$! HUNGARIAN CITIES. Seriously, if you don't have an intimate knowledge of Hungarian geography, be prepared to be VERY patient as you hunt for cities that can make things or cities mentioned in the turn's events.
The interface is, at best, idiosyncratic. I did not find it "intuitive" in the least bit. Once you know it, however, it becomes only clunky and annoying.
Also, the "large graphic figures" to represent armies are considerably harder to use and less informative than unit symbols would have been, and aren't nice enough looking to make up for that. (Frankly, they're multi-colored blobs -- not enough resolution available to do what they tried to do at the size they tried to do it at)

"Detailed gameplay - tough but fun."
Pros: Historically acurate, the game requires you to think before you act. You have to out think the AI to win. Analyse your moves before you commit because mistakes are costly.
Cons: It is hard to keep track of the recruitment of units. Unlikely victories of very small numbers over large armies are possible.

Version: 1848
Pros: Serious, realistic gameplay from a carefully designed engine, historically accurate unit attributes and excellent AI. I like that generals can realistically affect battle outcomes. If you don't mind thinking when you play, you'll love this game.
Cons: Although the interface is not completely intuitive at first, gamers who stick with it will be rewarded.
Summary: If this was a $20 game, I might say that it needs a bit of work, but for something free, it's amazingly good. I look forward to playing other games by Hussar.
