"It works, but you MUST lose some DVD features and/or quality. Will make only ONE DVD."

October 09, 2004  |  By gfanucci

 |  Version: 123 Copy DVD 1.0

Summary

I downloaded, installed, and tried the 123 Copy DVD Demo. I never tried copying a DVD before, and read a dozen product reviews before selecting THIS demo program to try.

I want to make backups of any DVD movie onto normal 4.5 GB DVD media -- so I do not have to use the original DVD. I do not want to lose quality or video features, but I am willing to make some tradeoffs when I want to make just ONE DVD disc from a bigger one. I want the ability to make a choice -- to keep all original features (menus, languages, special features, trailers...) and use multiple DVD blanks... -- OR -- to compress just the movie to fit on ONE blank DVD and maybe sacrifice some video quality.

123 Copy DVD demo works, HOWEVER it seems to FORCE me to fit the copy onto one DVD, and lose quality &/or features in doing so. It seems that it will NOT make multiple DVDs.

The demo install also modified my hardware config somehow, and now my Roxio CD/DVD software will not work, it says NO DRIVE is installed, and that I must reinstall Roxio software.

The demo says it will work for one week or make five DVD copies. HOWEVER, every time you run the program, even if you just run then quit, the counter goes down, so I was only able to make one DVD copy and could not test it again.

I was able to copy a 7.34 GB, 2-hr + 30-min, Region 1 DVD video to ONE 4.5GB blank video DVD, using an old Compaq Presario desktop PC (slow Athlon 450MHz CPU and 192MB RAM) with a new 8x DVD drive, and Windows 2000.

The resulting DVD will play on my Windows 2000 PC using CyberLink Power DVD player. The DVD copy will NOT play on my Mac, nor on two different DVD players I tried, one old, one new. (The original DVD plays OK on all.)

The 123 Copy DVD Demo program told me there was too much info on the DVD, and it would have to shrink it to fit onto one 4.5 GB DVD copy. It allowed me to select which features to copy, so I omitted ALL the special features and extra languages to try to get the BEST quality possible for JUST the movie. I wanted to make a 2nd DVD with just the special features and no movie...

It about TWO hours to copy the DVD Video Movie to my hard drive. It took about half an hour to burn the DVD copy.

The resulting DVD copy has NO menus, but it will play OK when using the Power DVD player on my PC. The quality is about 75% as good as the original DVD, and looks better than VHS tape quality.

FYI -- The original DVD was 7.34 GB, with 15 .VOB files. The hard drive copy was 3.88 GB (and has 4 .VOB files). The new DVD copy was 3.88 GB in UDF format.

I would buy the program if it gave me the choice to burn additional DVD discs to keep 100% original quality and all features. It does not seem to allow that. SO, I have to make just ONE DVD and then I lose something. IF this is what YOU want, then I can recommend this program!

I am still looking for the program that will do what I want -- give me the choice to burn ONE DVD and lose quality or features, OR, burn as MANY DVDs as it takes to keep original quality and ALL features.

IF you have a recommendation, please email me at ...

"no problems=some hints"

May 26, 2005  |  By budda04

 |  Version: 123 Copy DVD 1.0

Pros

I've burned 12 dvd now with only a few problems I've since overcome. I've read the other reviews and can't figure out where they went wrong. My suggestions, always copy the whole dvd, not just feature film. If you do anything check lanquages and get rid of french etc...

if you arent sure which sound scheme to use use em all, (i use Dolby 2 channels).

My systems pretty new but not souped up, Athlon xp3000, 512 MB ram, added a radeon 9200 vid card, and a lite-on dvdrw sohw-8125 dvd burner.

I copy dvd directly to HD then copy this to dvd. Copying takes about 20 min, burning about the same.

DVDs play fine, autostart on my phillips dvd player kicks right in. I'm usin el-cheapo 40cents ea phillips dvd-r.

Cons

Program keeps trying to default to feature film only, so watch your dialoque boxes....

some films ( crouching tiger hidden dragon ) that are features crammed have some pixalation, but minor.

"Not very satisfactory"

May 24, 2005  |  By weatherman

 |  Version: 123 Copy DVD 1.0

Pros

Simple to use

Cons

One movie plays only on my DVD player and no sound. Another movie plays only on my computer. Most movies cause my computer to freeze. Results are unpredictable and for the most part unuseable.

"Check the website carefully before using this product"

April 23, 2005  |  By Talisman

 |  Version: 123 Copy DVD 1.0

Pros

Nice, simple interface.

Cons

Makes changes in hardware and registry without notifying you of those changes, and uninstalling does not change the settings back.

Bought the product at a chain store, and the box mentioned nothing about only specific brands of burners being supported. Only too late did I find out that my DVD burner is not supported.

Which is why I believe that 123 CopyDVD does not work in my machine. I will have to wait for them to update their support list for my DVD burner.

Moral: Don't trust the box, Check the website for supported burners before using.

"Be sure your DVD Burner is supported"

March 28, 2005  |  By flexman44

 |  Version: 123 Copy DVD 1.0

Pros

This product is great and easy to use... If your Burner is supported (See the 123copydvd website for the list of supported drives). I originally started using it with a burner that was not supported. It would burn 1 out of 10 DVD's and ruin the rest. Now that I have a new burner, it works GREAT!
