Fat Thursday

If you're looking for the hedonistic celebration known as Mardi Gras, you're a bit late. Last Tuesday marked the end of the Mardi Gras season, which is followed by the long, painful period of Lent (for practicing Christians). Since I didn't get a chance to visit New Orleans or Rio de Janeiro this year, I'll use my trusty Thursday newsletter to exorcise all my amoral and destructive demons. Find the most despicable and self-indulgent games from the Download.com library in this week's High Five.

On the other side of the emotional spectrum, casual-games expert Karen uses the quickly approaching Valentine's Day as a chance to feature all her sweetie's favorite games. Awwwwww! Feel the love in this week's Play Nice. Next up, in honor of the European launch of World of Warcraft, Maps, Mods, & Skins features tools and movies from the popular MMORPG. Finally, On the GameSpot has an in-depth review of the anticipated RPG sequel Star Wars Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. Game on!

GAME OF THE WEEK: Creatrix
This excellent and free puzzle game is one of the finalists in the 2005 Independent Games Festival awards, and it combines puzzle, building, and fighting elements in a very intriguing way. The board looks like a dual Tetris setup, but instead of fitting blocks together, you assemble devices that attack your opponent and fill his or her board. The complexity involved requires some learning and practice, but the effort is well worth it.

Maps, Mods, & Skins

There's no doubt World of Warcraft has conquered North America. Now, Blizzard has its sights set on Europe, as the acclaimed MMORPG finally hits the continent on Friday. In concordance with the global spread of World of Warcraft, I have an update to a popular interface mod, tools for creating your own UI, and a mess of fan-made movies featuring action from Azeroth.

The excellent Cosmos UI mod recently updated with a more stable version. Add new skill bars and track your statistics, or create your own personal interface with the World of Warcraft custom interface tools. If you're preparing to join the game and you can't think of a character name, try Convex Studios Name Generator, which provides names for all eight races and both genders.

For real fun, however, check out some of the fan-made gameplay movies. See the Gnomes break loose in Gnomevasion and Gnomevasion 2; follow the adventures of a wandering Undead mage in Blaze of Glory; chortle at the hilarious results of the Mind Control spell in Alliance Tossing and Ring of Fire; or get in the Valentine's Day spirit with the truly cheesy A Hero's Love. Keep checking our World of Warcraft movie collection for more fan-made classics.

Maps, Mods, & Skins

Games are just not romantic. Love is about being humbled and exalted through a deep connection with another human being. That's simultaneously too complex to code and too simple to entertain.

So for Valentine's Day, I decided to write about some games my fiance likes. His favorite PC game is Roof Rats from After Dark, wherein you remove matching-colored blocks. The Download.com equivalent is Sega Swirl, doubly appropriate because my sweetie worked at Sega. He also enjoys Bad Dog 911, which, like TextTwist, asks you to form as many words as you can out of seven letters; you can find Super TextTwist in GameHouse Word Collection. Finally, my baby finds World's Fairs fascinating, so I got him the text adventure 1893: A World's Fair Mystery. May you all find love, too.
