We work hard, we play harder by committing virtual crimes, stalking a battlefield, performing daredevil ninja stunts, or just frantically matching similar shapes.

Industry hype at year's end was all about Doom 3, Half-Life 2, and Halo 2 for Xbox, but I think history will show Far Cry to be the best first-person shooter of 2004. The physics engine looks as good as Valve's Source, the vehicle handling is tighter, and the enemy AI is downright scary, making Far Cry my leading contender for the FPS throne.

Although choosing this warped crime-simulation game may call my sense of humor into question, I have fallen victim to SimGangster's illicit allure. Besides letting you engage in hedonistic, reckless, and thoroughly senseless behavior without risking your neck, the game's hilarious insult generator will cut you down to size when your crime sprees go south.

Passage 3 incorporates four unique variations on the theme of placing randomly selected tiles so they match a neighbor in color or image. The different gameplay modes provide plenty of challenging fun. Reviewing this game took two hours, and, um, follow-up has taken even more.

I'm an avid video-game player, and when I'm looking for a quick fix, I fire up a simple game called N. I stumbled across this little gem a few months ago, and I still keep its quick-launch icon on my desktop. I recommend it highly to old-school gamers who fondly remember 2D platform games from their youth, and to anyone looking for a challenging diversion.
